The CSO, the census and the needs of carers

The recent article by Foley (2008) on the geographies of informal care represents a welcome addition to the relatively small body of academic studies on the geography of health and social care in Ireland. Foley quite rightly outlines the potential utility of small area analysis to aid service planning and delivery. This is especially important given the particular needs and issues of carers, such as respite, financial strain and measures to combat isolation (O’Connor 1988, O’Connor & Ruddle 1988, Blackwell et al. 1992, Evason & Whittington 1996, Joint Committee on Women’s Rights 1996, O’Neill & Evans 1999, O’Shea 2000, Garavan et al. 2001, Lane et al. 2003).
