Abstract

Concepts of space and urban theory are considered in the context of the dramatic growth in urban Ireland over the past fifteen years with a focus on the interrelated ideas of space, time and place. These are developed and explored in an interdisciplinary way with the view to illuminating the empirical research that follows. It is argued that the articulation of these concepts have very practical impacts on the lives of those living in towns and cities. This leads to a consideration of a case study of recent developments in Tower, a settlement approximately 8km from Cork. A detailed study of the perceptions and attitudes of the residents provides insights into the process of urbanisation and its impact on urban communities.
