Abstract

This paper reviews the cleavages and patterns of support for Irish political parties as a prelude to an ecological analysis of voting patterns in the Galway West constituency at the 1977 General Election. It provides the first localised within-constituency analysis, complementing research on the geographical components of voting patterns in the constituency and extending research on ecological correlates at the national scale by other authors. The findings reveal that national scale divisions of party support are largely replicated at the local level, although with some modification
