Abstract

Numerous studies in recent years have highlighted regional and local disparities in the quality of life. Although useful, it is suggested that these studies may tend to overlook regional disparities of a different nature — namely in the quantity of life. This paper investigates whether significant regional variations in life expectancy are found within the Republic of Ireland. Three methods of quantifying life expectancy are used so as to reduce the possibility of an erroneous conclusion due to methodological factors. The analysis indicates that regional and urban-rural disparities within Ireland between 1971 and 1977 arc statistically significant. The implications of these findings arc discussed and suggestions are made for further research.
