Fred Boal’s paper, entitled ‘Territoriality on the Shankill-Falls Divide, Belfast’, written in 1969, has stood the test of time and remains cited to this day. That paper aimed to look at activity patterns but instead produced findings that indicated ethno-sectarian immobility given the ‘presence of two very distinctive territories’ (Boal 1969, 49). Territories that, within a matter of months, were to become ever more polarised as a pernicious and complex conflict emerged.
