This paper describes a Study in two parts. The first records the percentage of archaeological monuments destroyed in a pilot area in county Meath over a quarter of a century from 1969 until 1995. The second presents an analysis of farmers' altitudes to archaeological features, and their knowledge of the legal issues relating lo archaeology on the farm. The first part of the study points to a major and accelerating problem. The second, by highlighting differences between farming sub-groups, has the potential to indicate how the problem might be addressed.
