Abstract

The growth of multi‐purpose community development co‐operatives in Gaeltacht districts is described and the advantages of such organisations as agents of development at the local level and the achievement of the co‐operatives to‐date are discussed. Problems experienced by them are mainly associated with finance. Two Gaeltacht co‐operatives — Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne and Comharchumann Chois Fharraige — are examined and their achievements, together with the problems experienced by them, are reviewed. Future possibilities for the co‐operative movement's role in Gaeltacht development are suggested.
