Abstract

The second report of the Irish Railway Commissioners for 1836–38 contains information on the direction and volume of traffic movement in the hinterland of Dublin which bears comparison with data in modern surveys. A general stability in the movement routes is thereby demonstrated, and some indication is given of the outward extension of the zone under strong influence from Dublin. Recent changes in this zone are illustrated by the extension of early morning public transport routes. Issues relating to the measurement of the influence of Dublin at the present time are discussed briefly.
