As with many other cities, upon the full impact of industrialisation Belfast's once preindustrial socio-spatial structure inverted and it developed a recognisably Burgess/Hoyt style industrial city structure by the end of the 19th century. This paper considers Belfast's position by 1837, using the records of the First Valuation, and finds elements of a 'mercantile city' transitional phase.
