The Longfield Maps in the National Library of Ireland : an Agenda for Research

This paper describes the working copies of Irish estate surveys and other manuscript maps with related non-cartographic documents, dating mainly from the period 1770-1840, which were accumulated by a firm of Dublin land surveyors operating successively under the names of John Brownrigg, John Longfield and William Longfîeld and which were later acquired by the National Library of Ireland. The map-historical significance of the collection is briefly discussed, attention is drawn to the excellent and little-known catalogue of the maps produced by the staff of the National Library, and suggestions are offered for future research.
