In the period 1977–1986, the central area of Cork lost almost 50% of its manufacturing firms, with 80% of this loss due to closures. There were considerable differences by industrial sector, but little geographic variation in failures. The reasons for closure seem to have been similar to those in the British conurbations. On the positive side, many of the surviving firms felt there were locational advantages in the city centre, and replacement activities moved into 69% of the abandoned industrial premises. These were dominated by the tertiary sector. Policies for renewal have been developed over the past few years but their impact is not yet clear.Downloads
